I had some sympathy for him at the time of his Today programme report, but that's all long since evaporated.

Can't he see that if he tries to exact his revenge by deposing the Mayor, and thus imposing a dangerously incompetent Mayor in his place, he will have taken revenge on Londoners, rather than on the government? What did Londoners do to deserve that? I'm sure most Londoners were initially on his side in the war of words between the BBC and Alastair Campbell. Is this how he repays us?

I don't hold him fully responsible for the Evening Standard's desperate, appalling, biased coverage, but there's no doubt he'll take a fair chunk of the responsibility if Boris becomes Mayor.

He's also been completely inconsistent about what his aim is, calling himself a personal friend of Boris's to Paddick after an interview, proclaiming himself as "a Boris Johnson supporter" on BBC News, and now saying his agenda is purely anti-Ken. With so little focus on what he's really trying to achieve, one can't help but think he's afflicted with the same desperate need for self-publicity that makes Boris such a liability too.

I do have a little sympathy for Gilligan as, after everything he went through with the Hutton Report and the Labour machine going after him, he's clearly looking for revenge and, if he's working for a London-based publication then it's clearly going to be the London mayor.
